Protect against the “Penny Stock” Image Based Spam Emails

Inter Engineering and Clearswift would like to inform you that a significant increase of image-based Penny Stock spam has been detected.   The term 'Penny Stock' refers to pump-and-dump investment scams. Many of these use spam containing text within GIF images. These spam emails are detected effectively by the Managed Expression List used by Clearswift MIMEsweeper for SMTP v. 5.x

In order to set up the scenario correctly, it is important to follow the instructions below:

Within the MIMEsweeper Policy editor, import the list into a new Reference and set up a scenario with the following steps:

   Step 1.

·         Right click on References / New and select Managed Expression List.

·         Follow the wizard to the Managed Lists and highlight Scams: Penny Stock Images.

·         Follow the wizard and assign a name e.g. Penny Stock Images Expressions.

   Step 2.

·         Right click on Policies / Properties and select the SMTP Options tab.

·         Click in the window to add a new item and type in “Message-id” (without the quotes).

·         Click below to add another item and type in “Content-id” (without the quotes) then click OK.

·         Click below to add another item and type in “X-mailer” (without the quotes) then click OK.

Step 3.

·         Right click Scenarios / Incoming / New / Text Analyzer.

·         On the Data Types page check "Include selected data types".

·         Expand the Container tree and select "SMTP message".

·         Expand the Document tree and select both "HyperText Markup Language" and "Text".

·         Follow the wizard to the Expression List page.

·         Click on the drop-down list box and select the Penny Stock Images expression list.

·         On the Thresholds page check the box to "Aggregate values for all items in the message".

·         On the Scan Areas page check the button for "Specific areas".

·         Check the boxes for Body, Message-id, Content-id and X-mailer.

·         Assign whatever classification you have for spam (or alternatively you may wish to assign a new classification to quarantine these separately).

·         Finish to save the scenario and then click on the Save the MIMEsweeper Policy button.
