Is not having an account the only way to retain privacy in Facebook? F-Secure’s Safe Profile is making Facebook privacy simple for everyone – and testers are welcome.

Helsinki, Finland – May 7, 2013: Facebook’s tremendous success in attracting over 1 billion users shows that clearly, we “like” it – but as with any social networking service, privacy issues arise. F-Secure is bringing its security expertise to Facebook with a new app, Safe Profile, which will help protect users’ privacy in the world’s largest social network. Facebook users are welcome to participate in the development process by testing the app.

76 percent of consumers are concerned about their privacy when they share their life on social platforms.* And Facebook’s array of privacy settings, which enable users to precisely control the privacy aspects of the details of their accounts, can also be confusing, leading many users to accidentally share information publicly that they intended only for friends to see.

“The average person just wants to have fun with Facebook, not to spend time figuring out the intricacies of privacy settings,” says Maria Nordgren, VP, Consumer Security at F-Secure. “That’s where Safe Profile comes in. We’ve boiled down the most important privacy settings. We scan your profile against them and let you know where your account can be improved.”

Scans, Rates & Recommends for Safety
Too many settings, pages, and updates in Facebook? Safe Profile informs you about the most important safety and privacy issues, all in one place. Do Facebook’s privacy options change too often to keep up? Safe Profile stays up-to-date with frequent changes. Does getting a handle on Facebook privacy feel like a job, not a leisure activity? Safe Profile’s recommendations are easy to understand.

Safe Profile is designed to be the fastest privacy scanning engine in the world. After scanning, it gives a rating for the account’s privacy, displays any potential issues and makes recommendations for more secure settings. Safe Profile does not store personal data, it only scans.

F-Secure, the award-winning provider of best protection for Internet security,** is well-placed to help Facebook users protect their personal information and social media interactions.

“Security and privacy is at the core of what we do, and with the privacy concerns associated with social networks, we’re excited to be working to provide protection for those users,” says Nordgren. “Our slogan is ‘Protecting the irreplaceable’ – and what is more irreplaceable than your privacy, your reputation?”

To try Safe Profile and give your feedback and improvement ideas, log into your Facebook account and search for “Safe Profile Beta.” Feedback can be offered at https://www.facebook.com/FSecureSafeProfile

As a major internet user, the Pennsylvania State University is keenly aware of the need for Internet Security. Penn State implemented a number of security measures such as encryption, fire walling and password authorization to protect students’ personal information.

Strong authentication allowed Penn State to transfer their paper-based business processes into online electronic procedures. By deploying VASCO’s DIGIPASS authentication devices to faculty and staff, the University was able to provide direct electronic and secure access to its administration services.

Objective
Implement Two-factor authentication devices to secure Penn State’s online administrative business processes at a reasonable cost.

Challenge
The authentication devices must to be fully compliant with the University’s existing infrastructure without needing to deploy additional hardware.

Solution
DIGIPASS is an affordable solution that could be fully integrated within the third party’s authentication package. The average battery lifetime of five years and beyond offers a high return on investment.

Only about one in ten business PCs and laptops are sufficiently up-to-date. The rest are potential security risks, a problem easily solved by F-Secure’s Software Updater.

Helsinki, Finland – April18, 2013:87 percent of corporate computers are missing critical software updates that could threaten business security, according to F-Secure data from around 200,000 workstations mostly in Europe. Among the most common missing updates are those for Java, Microsoft technologies, Adobe Flash Player, Firefox and Open Office.

“From the numbers, it appears many people don’t fully understand that keeping software up-to-date is a critical component of computer and business security,” says Esa Tornikoski, Product Manager at F-Secure. “70 to 80 percent of the top ten malware detected by our Labs are exploits targeted against software vulnerabilities.*”

According to the data, 49 percent of corporate PCs and laptops are missing one to four critical updates, 25 percent are missing five to nine, and 13 percent are missing ten or more.

The numbers are striking, especially with attacks on corporates and institutions via software vulnerabilities headlining the news in recent months. The Red October malware, which stole sensitive information from governmental and research organizations as well as companies for five years until it was exposed in January, relied on exploits in Microsoft Word, Excel and Java. These data breaches, all exploiting software vulnerabilities that have long been patched, could have been avoided simply by keeping software current.

Many of these computers are in terrible shape in terms of data security,” says Erkki Mustonen, Information Security Advisor at F-Secure. “With F-Secure’s Software Updater, these environments are easily kept up-to-date. Software Updater is a proactive patch management feature of F-Secure Protection Service for Business that handles not only patches, but also version updates.”

Software Updater: Simple, proactive, smart
Keeping all an organization’s software current can be an overwhelming task, which is why it gets neglected. F-Secure’s Software Updater makes the overwhelming simple by ensuring that an organization’s operating systems and third-party applications are up-to-date. It proactively scans computers for missing security updates and patches and deploys them automatically, displaying the results. A manual option is also available for those who want greater control.

Software Updater is unique from other patch management software in that it is part of a comprehensive antivirus solution. Protection Service for Business includes F-Secure’s best-of-breed DeepGuard technology that protects workstations and servers from zero-day attacks – those that exploit vulnerabilities which haven’t yet been patched by the vendor.

“Protection Service for Business is an all-in-one solution for corporate security,” says Tornikoski. “The fact that it also includes Software Updater saves businesses from having to make extra investments in separate patch management software.”

F-Secure Online Scanner is refreshed, rebuilt and repowered to clean up PC malware in one easy scan-and-clean – and now tackles rootkits too.

Helsinki, Finland – April4, 2013: F-Secure’s free Online Scanner tool has been completely rebuilt to be faster, lighter and more powerful than before, and now even cleans up advanced rootkits, the most difficult-to-remove malware. The tool, downsized to a slim 5MB, is easy to use with just a couple of clicks. It cleans without actually installing itself to the PC – so consumers can run it and then forget about it.

44 percent of consumers confess to being insecure when surfing the web due to concerns about clicking on an unsafe link that may lead to their computer getting infected,* and with good reason.

“Cyberspace is a jungle,” says Kimmo Kasslin, Director, Security Research at F-Secure Labs. “Sites that are usually trustworthy are being compromised with malware, and users can be silently infected without any overt action – simply by landing on a malicious or compromised website. That’s why it’s always a good idea to run a quick scan – even if you have another security software installed.”

Removes Viruses + Rootkits = All-In-One Cleaning
Advanced rootkits boot up before the operating system itself boots up, making them extremely difficult to detect. Two of the biggest and fastest-growing botnets, TDL and ZeroAccess, use rootkit techniques to aid its spread. ZeroAccess racked up millions of infections globally in 2012, with up to 140,000 unique IPs in the US and Europe, according to F-Secure’s Threat Report H2 2012.

Rootkit removal can be complex and time consuming, often requiring the user to create a separate CD or flash drive and to spend time calling customer support. With F-Secure Online Scanner there’s no need for CDs, thanks to its new Deep Clean, a Linux-based operating system that specializes in rootkit removals. When Online Scanner detects a rootkit, it boots the machine into Deep Clean, which removes the malware. After the removal Deep Clean boots the machine back into Windows. All this is done automatically without any user actions.
“The beauty of the new F-Secure Online Scanner is its speed, simplicity, and universality,” says Kasslin. “It’s small and light, but it’s packed with power, detecting the latest threats immediately.”
